De-Stress in a hot tub or a bubble bath
Q: I'm a shower person. I don't have time nor
patience to get in the tub? I think showers are just as refreshing, they are
quick and efficient. No muss no fuss. Job well done! A: Indeed, showers are typical of today's fast-paced lifestyle, they meet society's criteria of cleanliness, but they don't address the physical, mental and emotional stress that is at the root of many of today's stress-induced ailments. In other words, they do not address the body-mind connection.
Q: Body-mind connection? That sounds so "New Age-ish".
A: Yes; but research in the new field of bio-physics has discovered that neuro-transmitters, enzymes, hormones, and peptides, are not just produced by the brain; they are found throughout the entire body. This is why a quick shower does not de-stress you the way a tub bath does. It takes a little time to address this body-mind connection. Researcher Candace Pert, Ph.D. has dubbed these various
neuro-transmitters the "molecules of emotion". In other words, your
body is not merely a vehicle to carry your brain around. Trauma and old
memories are stored throughout the body, from your digestive tract to all
organs and muscles. Q: Is this why massages, chiropractic treatments, acupuncture,
reflexology and other body work is so effective against stress-induced aches and pain? A: Absolutely. Even dancing is a great de-stressor. In her book Your
Body Is Your Subconscious Mind, Dr. Pert describes how your body is an
intricate network, constantly transmitting information to and from its
various parts in form of emotions and feelings. So, if you really want to de-stress, close the door to the outside world for however long it takes to release all the emotional slights and hurts the world doles out in the course of a day. Luxuriate in a hot tub or bubble bath. Relax. Visualize yourself melting. . . as ice melts into water, and water melts into vapor, imagine your stress evaporating like the soap bubbles that bust and dissolve into thin air.
There are a number of herbs or bath salts available, either in the
supermarket or in specialty shops. Even plain Epsom Salt works; the sulfate
and magnesium contained in Epsom Salt exerts an effect on the more than 325
enzymes which orchestrates the body's many functions.
So stop thinking of your body as a dead hunk of meat. The old saying about "sticks and stones" does not hold true. Emotional and mental stress is as harmful to your body as it is to your mind.
